Career Development Funding

The Shuford Program recognizes interning and pursuing professional development opportunities can be cost-prohibitive and is dedicated to supporting all students in their plan to complete this important program requirement.

Career Development Funding Overview

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, the Shuford Program provides career development (internship and professional development) funding to students to help them participate in experiences around the world. Student funding is open for fall, spring, and summer experiences and is issued on a rolling basis. Priority is given to students with unpaid internships and those interning in high-cost-of-living locations like Los Angeles, New York City, or in international locations.

Scholarships include:

  • Purdy Family Excellence in Entrepreneurial Studies Fund
  • Monk Family Internship Program for Eastern North Carolina: for students from or interning in Eastern North Carolina
  • Don and Melinda Hardison Healthcare Student Experience Fund: for students interning in the healthcare industry
  • Williams Family Internship Experience Fund
  • Perriello Family Student Experience Fund: for students interning in New York City
  • Simmons Family Excellence Fund in Entrepreneurship in the Shuford Program: for students interning on the African continent or pursuing work related to water, microfinance, and women’s issues
  • JSR Trust Fund for Social Entrepreneurship: for students interning in social entrepreneurship ventures

Funding Request Requirements

Applicants for Funding must:

  • Be currently enrolled in the Shuford Program
  • Describe how the experience or internship supports an entrepreneurial mindset and/or supports personal and professional development
  • Include a budget detailing how the funding will be used for and the total amount requested

Recipients must provide a summary of their experience, a current photo, and brief bio upon the completion of their career development opportunity.

Estimating Your Financial Needs

All career development funding requests require an itemized budget detailing how a potential award will be used. Students should consider housing, transportation, and other expenses when putting together a budget.

Awarded funds must be used/applied as described in the application. The Shuford Program can seek reimbursement if a student changes the internship or makes major changes in venture ideas without prior approval. Falsification of experience or how money will be used is in direct violation of the honor code, and students will be subject to the honor court processes if deemed necessary.

Please note that AWARDS will post to UNC student accounts. All funding is first applied to cashier-billed expenses; anything leftover, called a credit balance, is generated as a refund to use for out-of-pocket estimates.
