Elevator Pitch
Jed is a seasoned entrepreneur, investor, board member, and professor with extensive experience in media, entertainment, technology, and consumer products. He has co-founded and led startups, scaled growth-stage companies, executed turnarounds, and expanded U.S. businesses internationally, including building companies in London and selling to major platforms. Today, he teaches Entrepreneurship at Duke and UNC and is an active angel investor and advisor.
Jed has held senior leadership roles at the intersection of media, entertainment, and technology. At Turner Broadcasting, he helped develop the Cartoon Network and led the turnaround of the legendary cartoon studio Hanna-Barbera following its acquisition. While at Hanna-Barbera, the studio built new properties, including The Power Puff Girls, Johnny Bravo, and Dexter’s Laboratory. He later restructured Robert Redford’s Sundance Group, serving as COO. He was a board member of NASN, the European sports network later acquired by Disney. While in London, he was Managing Director of Excite International, where he launched the internet search engine company in Europe. Additionally, he co-founded eos Ventures, an early-stage incubator focused on digital content companies.
Jed co-founded Next New Networks, a pioneer in online video creator discovery and channel development, which was acquired by Google (YouTube). At YouTube, he was the global head of YouTube news and education content partnerships, managing relationships with ABC News, Khan Academy, Vice News, TED, BBC, BuzzFeed, and more. He also ran YouTube’s original funded channels in Europe, launched YouTube Lab, and established Space London, YouTube’s first European creator space.
Jed has mentored and managed talent who have since become leaders at Netflix, TikTok, YouTube, Meta, Epic Games, Instagram, Twitch, and Duolingo.
After leaving YouTube, Jed became an Entrepreneur-In-Residence and Professor of Practice at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. At UNC, he is a part of Shuford’s Entrepreneurship program and leads the Shuford-Honors program in London. Additionally, he’s a professor of practice in Duke University’s Innovation & Entrepreneurship program, where he teaches a class that focuses on the intersection of media, entertainment, technology, and consumer products.
Jed is a Carolina Chiron Award recipient. The Professor who receives the Chiron Award is asked to give the lecture he “has always wanted to give,” based on Randy Pausch’s Last Lecture.
Jed started his career in sports television with ABC Sports as a member of the 1984 Olympic Unit and has covered three Olympics (Sarajevo, Los Angeles, and Seoul).
He is also an ambassador for Grassroot Soccer, an adolescent health organization that leverages soccer’s power to equip young people with the life-saving information, services, and mentorship they need to live healthier lives.
He holds an MBA from Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business and a degree in Public Policy from Duke University. Originally from Connecticut and New York City, Jed has lived and worked in NYC, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Durham, and London (for over a decade).
When he’s not advising startups or teaching, you’ll find him playing pond hockey wherever he can.
“No one you have been and no place you have gone ever leaves you. The new parts of you simply jump in the car and go along for the rest of the ride. The success of your journey and your destination all depend on who’s driving.” – Bruce Springsteen
